Osteoporosis (also called as "porous bones") is a bone disorder characterized by the decrease in bone density and strength resulting to skeletal fracture. This disease are commonly seen in elderly women but may also develop to anyone with particular hormonal disorders and some chronic diseases.
An individual with osteoporosis has a reduced bone mineral density, microarchitecture is disrupted and has altered amount of bone proteins. The World Health Organization or WHO has characterized osteoporosis particularly in women as a bone mineral density 2.5 standard deviations below peak bone mass.
A normal bone is composed of protein, collagen and calcium which makes it strong and healthy. Osteoporosis disrupts this nutrients causing the bone to easily fracture. A bone fracture can be in any type of breaking like cracking and collapsing such as hips, ribs, wrists and spine injuries. Because of these fragility in bone injuries, life expectancy and quality of life of osteoporosis patients are tremendously affected.

This disease can develop without significant symptoms for a long period of time (mostly years) unless the bone actually fractures. Also, some osteoporotic fractures may avoid detection especially if there is not visible symptoms. Common symptoms of osteoporotic fracture is pain on the location of the injured body. Aside from that, there is no concrete symptoms making all sufferers unaware of this bone disorder.
What are the causes of Osteoporosis? There are numerous causes of developing this disease. One of the major cause is hyperparathyroidism. Parathyroid glands causes severe osteoporosis, even striking at an early young age. Other cause is over consumption of dietary protein were it makes calcium to be taken from the bones and excreted in the urine. Below are some other factors that cause osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis can be prevented with total lifestyle changes that includes proper nutrition and regular exercise. Avoid health damaging vices such as smoking and alcohol consumption. Medications are also a great option for disease medical treatment. Reduce your protein intake and consume more on calcium and vitamin D rich foods. Exercise greatly helps prevent the formation of osteoporosis and at the same time can reverse its development.
Osteoporosis is a serious disease and should not be ignored. Your health may be in high risk if this is not detected within your lifetime. Always live healthy and avoid bone fracture injuries as much as possible. Our bones are as important as our heart and without it, you won't be able to live the life you wanted.
